How to Spot a Game That You Should Not Play

Now that I'm back in high spirits again. Let's continue our journey through my rambling and potentially misleading opinions that are (personally) still a lot better than the recent news media activities. Today I want to talk about video games, but not in why would people play one. Most importantly, why people wouldn't want to instead. A lot of game makers got too focused on the things that they should be doing for the game, but forgetting about the things that they should avoid in the process.

Let's start with the basics, shall we. First, let's discuss the simple question: what is a "video game"? I'm going to go ahead and politely steal from wikipedia because I don't have the talent on describing things: A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device. The word video in video game traditionally referred to a raster display device, but it now implies any type of display device that can produce two- or three-dimensional images.

So why would people play video games? If you're honestly asking that question because you actually don't know the answer, then I'll asume you got hit in the head so bad that you lost half of your common sense. It is obviously to have fun, why else would you waste your precious time staring at a screen pressing buttons and not getting any notable reward for it?

Seriously, why?

A Game's 'Fun' in Its Purest Form

2014 Steam Christmas sale is coming, so I hope you gamers have some money left to spare for the outrageous discounts and didn't spent too much on the last sale period. I had to admit, several of the price were so low that I bet a lot of you bought games that you might never play anyway. Might want to remember this the next time you want to tease girls for buying a lot things out of impulse. But I do hope that you at least got your hands on Garry's Mod (Gmod) among other things.

"What is it?" you may ask. Well, Gmod is a physics sandbox game using a modified Source engine from Valve, where you can do literally anything you want. There are no goals or objective that you must do in order to play it 'properly', the game will just put you in a map and gives you tools and other stuffs to play with and have fun with all of it, the rest is completely up to you.

Thinking Upside-Down With the Inverted Y-Axis

Let's do a quick count; Who among us here who plays, or at least used to play, First-Person Shooter games with their mouse Y-axis inverted? Raise your hand if you're one of them, I'll wait.
...
..
Done? Great. I hope I'm not the only one raising their hand looking like a retard.

Yeah, I used to play FPS game with the inverted mouse option ticked on, and I totally was not able to play it otherwise. Believe me, I tried a lot back then, but the only thing I get was increased miss rate and death counts. It really caused some problem when I'm playing with my friends and switching players each time one of us dies, even more than when someone's eating some cheese potato chips.

Little did they know that I always masturbated beforehand

Still Wondering What Did the 'Tree of Savior' Had Done to Earn that Name

If you're familiar with the MMORPG genre, then you must have at least know about Ragnarok Online, like pretty much half of MMORPG players do. It was a very big hit back in its time, and it also proved that once again, Korean MMO games rule the world.

Long before their ridiculous, yet catchy, songs do

But the game came out here in Indonesia during the time when I was still in High School, and I was an overly secluded kid back then, so I couldn't play it anyway. The main reason that I didn't want to play it was because it's a pay to play game, and when I thought about it and adding the money I would need to spend to play in cyber cafes, I wouldn't be able to hide it from my parents at all.

Shittiest Night-shift Job Ever

If you've been lurking around the internet and/or especially Youtube, you should be familiar with the title Five Nights at Freddy's (FnaF). It is a point-and-click indie survival horror game that became very popular in only a few days after its release, with mostly positive reviews all around. Its second installment, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (FnaF2), was released around a week ago, and horror game fans swarmed all over it thanks to the success of the first FnaF.

So what's this game is all about that it earned so much fame in a short time? Let's go through the plot first. You play as a security guard in a family restaurant called 'Freddy Fazzbear's Pizza', a family restaurant where "kids and parents alike come for the entertainment and food". Their form of entertainment comes in the form of special animatronics mascots, 'Freddy' the bear and his friends, programmed to please the crowds.

I just can't see how kids would love these things

A Tribute to Command & Conquer, the RTS Legend

Quick, what is the first genre that comes up in your mind when you hear the word "PC game"?

Results may vary, there's no right or wrong answer. Especially when literally every one of them can be related to a PC game, be it action, adventure, strategy, RPG, sports, visual novels, erotic games, etc. You name it, the PC got it, even the ones that makes you wonder "what the fuck am I playing?".

This should be a simulator for toddlers

As for me, I would go with Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games. Two reasons, the first one being that it is THE only game that you could play properly on a PC. Sure, there has been some versions of it released for consoles, but I didn't enjoy playing it there at all. How the hell can you manage multiple squads, constructions, resource gathering, and unit micro-management all at the same time with a goddamn joypad?
