Yes, I'm Trying to Define 'YOLO' Here

Finally free from my college class after a double test last week. One of them was a written test, International Business subject, the first time everyone thought it was really hard. I have to agree to that as well, because even though it's a free thought-exploration as always, there are several theories that we need to back our opinion (read - bullshits).

The other one was a take-home exam, Business Ethics subject, that we needed to submit on the same day. It was hard in its own way because... We didn't know what we should do. We were supposed to give some analysis and provide solutions, yet the case given kinda answered itself, so in the end it turned out like some summary of the case.

The case was about the poisoned Tylenol pills in Chicago back in 1982, where seven people ended up dead after consuming them. You can read the rest here and here if you want, since I don't want to bore you with the details.

Nor do I want to give you ideas

What bugs me is that during the week when I was doing the exam, a friend of my friend suddenly died after only a few years of marriage. Two people in my neighbourhood also died only one day apart from each other, one of them even had a heavy rain dropping right before his body was about to be taken to his final resting place which might show that he was a really good man that even the skies weep for him.

And then there's the Israel-Gaza conflict that killed hundreds of people in total. And a few days after that, there was the tragedy of the MH17 Malaysian Airlines that crashed around the Ukrainian land, presumably shot down by the rebels. The whole passenger and the crew died, around 295 people in total, my condolences to the families and friends left behind. So basically I was aware of the death of almost a thousand people in only this month. And that's not even taking in the death count of the people I killed in Planetside 2.

And they never saw it coming

As you can see there, nearly all of the deaths happened without any sign that it would happen at all. They happened so suddenly that there was nothing to prepare both the deceased and the family, especially during the conflict and the plane crash. Even then, death rarely knocks on your door to give you some heads up; he usually comes barging in, and sometimes making a sudden dynamic entry for a quick smash-and-grab for your soul.

Nothing we can do to prevent it, we are mortals after all, it will happen to us one day whether you're prepared or not. Unless you're some kind of an immortal being, which I know one of you are, no need to hide it from me.

"Shit, how does he know?"

The only thing we can do about it is to make sure the life we're living right now is something that you enjoy, and live it to the fullest. If you have a dream that you haven't fulfilled yet, then go for it starting right now. It might take a while, but if you can manage it in the end, then you will have a life worth spending the rest of your time in this world before death shows up on your front door.

"But it's too late for me to do it" you might say, "I'm too old".
Now don't use age for a reason not to do awesome things in your life just because you don't feel like doing it anymore, there are a lot of people who finally got the life they wanted after the age of 50. Besides, what else are you going to do anyway, throw the rest of the responsibility to your kid after you pass away because you don't have anything to leave for them? Teach your kid to live the same normal-boring life and prevent them from trying a different way because that's all you know about it?

Well, sorry to say, that only means you've failed as parent. Forcing your kid go with your way of life just because YOU don't feel like doing something else is just a way to show that you're a jerk. Besides, there's no such thing as too old for anything, take the example of Roger Murtaugh deciding to take it like a man and keep going at it with his life as an old police officer in one of the best movie franchise in the '90s.

"But I don't have the money to do it" you might say, "I have no budget for it".
Then start saving for it, right the hell now. Find another source of income, stop spending on those unnecessary stuffs, quit subscribing to that monthly porn, do whatever it takes so that you can have the money for it.

"Shit, how does he know?"

"But I don't have the time to do it" you might add, "I'm so busy with work".
No, there's always enough time if you really want to make it happen. Most of my friends in college are busy employees, some are super busy that they still carry their work over or don't show up in class at all. But they're still taking the lessons, and are still able to study for tests. Besides, even you always able to find some time to laze around after all, don't lie.

"But I don't know how to do it" you might say, "I'm not skilled in that kind of thing". Then start learning to do it, right the hell now. This is the information era where everything can be found on the internet, you could be a web designer, or a cook, or an amateur video editor in a matter of days just by following the tutorials on Youtube.

One my best friends have a dream to become an artist, and he only started drawing back on 2007, and his drawing used to suck so bad that I believe I can do better. Now, he's a professional artist with an average income of around $400 a month from requests alone.

Also the first person to fully draw my precious darling

"But he's talented" you might add, "I don't have the talent to do that".
Then why are you aiming for it? Surely there are other thing that you're good at and benefits your life. If you're good at handcrafting, try making things that would sell. If you're good at writing, write some blogs or articles with a content aside from a mere diary. If you're good at talking, try doing some commentary or review in Youtube. If you're really good at gaming, go pro, make a team, claim those delicious prize money instead of spouting hollow brags and taunts in pubs like most 'pro-gamers' do.

"But I really want to do that for a living" you might retort, "nothing else interests me".
Well, alright then... If that's what you really want to do then by all means, go for it, don't let me or anyone else stop you. You might stumble around for a bit because you don't have the talent to do it, but hard work and consistency will pay off in the end. Even if you fail to reach it, you might find that one other thing you want to do and are actually capable of along the way.

"But I'm too lazy to do it" you finally confess, "I prefer going with the flow like this".
Okay, at least you're being honest, unlike most people who always makes up excuses to justify their laziness. We are born to be lazy anyway, that's why us mankind keep inventing new technologies to make our lives as comfortable as possible.

This could really be our potential future one day

And it's true that there are people who are completely happy with the 'basic procedure' of life, which contains |go to school - graduate - go to college - get a job - be a good employee - retire - die| kind of life. And if that way of living suits you perfectly, then congratulations, you're set on the happy path of life.

However, if at any point you feel like you hate what you're doing and wish to do something else (which is a very common thought among the employees working for a company), or you feel like that fire which drives your fighting spirit just died out, then you're not there yet. Keep looking for that thing that will drive your inner beast alive and kicking.

"Okay, then what about you?" you might ask, "are you there yet?"
No, I'm definetely not there yet. I virtually have no income, aside from some complimentary payments from computer services here and there. I'm basically living off from my job savings and from my parents, that's a really not ideal way to live right there.

Especially when your hobby is expensive

But I don't want to keep this up forever, Since I realize that every attempt of me applying for normal jobs always ends in failure, I'm doing whatever I can to reach that point of life where I can finally work at home (read the 'born to be lazy' part above), do the things I love, and earn some money to at least support myself. I like writing stuffs like this, even though my own real handwriting is even worse than an elementary schooler's, that's why I keep doing it with the hopes that this ability will help support me later on. It might not be much, but at least I'm trying to make something from the things that I love doing.

Life is short, and I believe spending the majority of it by living someone else's life is not something that you want to do. Make the most out of your life like today is your last, there was no guarantee that you'd be alive long enough to read this sentence anyway.

Find the thing that makes you feel like doing it forever, that even makes you forget to eat or sleep because it's so fun and fulfilling for you. Aim for a life that is so awesome that you can actually say that you have no regrets in all honesty, and you'd feel like you're ready to go anytime because your life, more or less, is complete.

Hopefully your death would feel pretty much like this to you and everyone around you, in different perspectives
